July Meeting Recap:

July 2016 meeting - Jon Sauer - Chatter

Bob

Chatter is the process of creating a symetrical pattern on a wood turned piece. The pattern is typically created on the end grain (but not always). A tool, created for the purpose, is held in a certain way, with the lathe turning at a certain speed. Jon treated us to many examples of pieces treated by chatter. Among those were perfume bottles and other pieces beautifully turned on his ornamental lathe and further decorated by chatter technique. Demonstration on a lathe will be done at a later time.

An important message from George Lutz about the BBQ

Picnic notes: The picnic will run from 4:00 until 7:00. The people helping with setup need to be there around 3:00. We are expecting 50-60 people.

Parking will be a problem as we cannot use the house next door this year. Try to car pool if possible. You will have to find a space on the surrounding streets. If you have tools or wood to drop off you can use Jim's driveway. We want to keep the driveway open for pickup and drop off only.

The club will provide Hamburgers, Italian Sausage, Chicken, Potato Salad, Potato Chips, Cookies, water, soft drinks, and decaf coffee. We will also provide plates, silverware, and condiments. Food will start being served around 4:30. Snacks will be out before the BBQ starts.

So, you need to bring your own chair and something for the BBQ - your favorite dish or a snack? Also be sure to bring cash for the tool auction and wood raffle.

Tool Auction: This will be a silent auction. We can always use more tools for the auction, so clean out your shops and contribute those tools that have not seen action for a number of years. All proceeds go to the club. Tom Kenyon will be running the auction.

Wood Raffle: We will be selling tickets for the raffle at the picnic. As each number is drawn that person will be able to take a pick from the pile. We will continue until the wood is gone. Jim does not want any left. Please bring contributions to the pile. We always need more wood - right?

George

Editor note: We owe thanks to George for his work on this BBQ. Also, we owe thanks to Larry Maggi for working the BBQ in years past. Well done!
