October 2017 club meeting: Richard Winslow - Ornaments

Richard

It is a wooden ball, 3" in diameter, made of contrasting wooden segments, turned on a lathe. It is complicated, yet simple and Richard showed us how to do it. Using 3/4 by 1.5 inch contrasting wood strips, glued with veneer accent, the resulting pieces are cut into segments and then reassembled. They are turned in two halves and assembled into a beautiful ornament ball.

Carl Jacobson - Sunday November 12, 2017

Carl

Carl Jacobsen is a prolific YouTube purveyor of woodturning videos, with 166,825 subscribers and 24,486,933 views since April 2007, with projects spanning the interest of beginners to advanced turning.
Carl showed 'basket illusions' using a beading tool, wood burner tool and playing cards.
He made an automotive shifting knob from spalted wood with an over spray paint chip turned into a highlight.
Finally he turned a lidded box. He showed clever techniques for holding base and lid to turn the ends.
The demonstration was held in the SVW shop at the Santa Clara High School.

From our President

WOW! Here it is December with our Holiday party just ahead. The year has flown by. They say time goes faster the older you get...I believe it now. This year has been a little different. We tried mixing up the meetings' agendas with mixed results. The summer BBQ at Fred’s house presented some challenges, but it went well. Continuing our joint efforts with SVW, we had three outstanding professional demos. Without a program committee leader, the BOD was able to arrange monthly programs. Bob Bley started hosting sawdust sessions. Our membership remained about the same. The church's TV problems were solved...knock on wood! All in all, a successful year.

Remember the Holiday dinner on Dec 12. Even if you did not signup, please come; bring your significant other, and a dish of your choosing. The club provides the ham, turkey, mash potatoes, gravy, rolls, and water. Enjoy the social time and the potluck dinner. Contribute a turned Christmas tree ornament to the Christmas tree ornament auction which helps pay for the dinner. Bring a wrapped turned gift for the gift exchange. Every year the quality of the gifts is outstanding; here is your chance to collect fellow members' turning.

We have been behind in identifying the BOD and committees leads for 2018. The good news is that all the committee leads have agreed to continue thru 2018. Roman Chernikov has agreed to serve as secretary, the position Duncan MacMillan has held for two years. Duncan will assume the treasurer position.

Bud Trapp is leaving the board after four years being treasurer. We all owe Bud a big Thank You for all the hard work and dedication. He has done an outstanding job of maintaining membership status and the managing the club's finances. THANK YOU Bud.

We have not identified a president, as I do not plan to continue. If you are interested or know of a member that would be a good president, please raise your hand.
Thank you to everyone who have supported me in the last two years and made this year successful. Have a happy holiday season.

Tom Kenyon
