January 2018 meeting and a preview of February

  party

I hope you enjoyed the program in January on the different gift exchanges from our December meeting. I have to say the turning exchange was excellent this year and I personally enjoyed learning a little more about how they were made. I will be following up in February with a lot more detail on the basket illusion process. We will cover the tools that you need, including where I bought the ones I use, and demonstrate the basic process. It does take far more time that we will have to go from start to finish on a piece, so this will just be a short demonstration of each of the different steps. Don’t forget the president’s challenge for Feb is a lidded box, and the challenge for March is embellishment. The basket illusion is one form of embellishment, but feel free to show us a different kind! See you in February!

President's Musings - Bud Trapp

This flu bug has been very serious this year. Many of us were sorry to have missed the excellent program in January. All the reports were very positive, there was a lot of questions and good discussion.

Our Club now has a Meeting Program Team. It was very pleasing that everyone said, YES, when asked. The team members are: Claude Godcharles, Harvey Klein, Dave Plemons, and Richard Winslow. Please give your ideas to them and if they ask you to present a Program, be sure to say, YES.

The WBW Board met last week and it was decided to up-grade the prizes for the President’s Challenge. We believe the prize should be worth between $20 and $25. The Board asked me to send an email to all members asking for your suggestions for prizes. One suggestion was to increase the number of Craft Supplies $10 Gift Certificates, therefore in the future a prize will be two Certificates.

Remember these Certificates do not expire. I recently used a Certificate that was dated to expire in 2007, but Craft Supplies honored it. Don’t throw away those old Gift Certificates they have value.

On March 13, Dennis Lillis will demonstrate how to make a thin wall bowl from greenwood. You will not want to miss this. The President’s challenge for April will be greenwood/thinwall bowls.

See Dave Vannier’s notes above on February’s meeting. See you in February.

Jefferson Award goes to Richard and Peter

As mentioned at our November meeting, we are all very proud of Richard Winslow and Peter Pipe for having received the prestigious Jefferson Award for their 16-year wood-working  program at a local middle school. We are noting their accomplishment again here so you have the links to the television and local newspaper coverage, noted immediately below. Please take a moment to see/read the complete stories.

Richard - Peter

The 5KPIX KCBS story is here.

The Los Altos Town Crier story is here.

With Richard and Peter's efforts as inspiration, we have set a goal for the club to increase our outreach efforts this year, hoping to foster a greater interest in wood-turning. You can help by bringing potential new members to our monthly meetings and especially to upcoming demos. If you have any ideas on how the club can increase our outreach, please speak up.

Again, congratulations and thanks to Richard and Peter!
