President's Letter - Claude Godcharles

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (not the spaghetti western!)

Have you ever turned a piece that you were less than satisfied with? Maybe it's the form, the details like foot or rim, the thickness and weight, the visual balance...

Not long after I got the bug and started turning, I joined West Bay Woodturners. I was lucky that there were a lot of presentations about design that gave me a basic understanding of what to strive for. We even had a juried competition back then, which provided a lot of direct feedback to improve your pieces. At the March meeting we will resurrect one of these presentations that was put together by Laura and Barry Uden in 2009. Luckily for us, design concepts have not changed much since ancient times! This talk will give you useful information and language to evaluate and describe what you are looking at.

To tag along with the presentation, the president's challenge will be a bit different this time. I am asking you to bring a piece that you are NOT satisfied with. I know I have a few of those around, and maybe you do too! We will look at those pieces AFTER the presentation, and see if we can use what we learned to ensure a better outcome.

This should be fun and very informative. I know it was for me at the time.

"As the Wood Turns" Organize your Shop - by Dave Vannier

One of the biggest drawbacks to collecting too much wood and acquiring too many tools, or trying too many different things is we spend too much time moving and rearranging. This month has been a real reminder of that fact. Besides being a sad reminder of missing someone I considered a friend, helping get his tools back in use and helping his wife clear out some space was a good experience. A thanks to all who put in time and helped out. Jon, Carolyn, and I really appreciate it. As those of you that acquired wood or tools make things, please share them with the club.

Dave was not terribly organized. Sadly, I come home and see my shop is probably in worse shape. This year I’m going to set a goal of cleaning up and finish more of the projects that I’ve started. Labeling more of the wood that I get will be a good start. Mostly I know where I got all the wood that I have personally collected. Wood that has been given to me is a different question. Let’s see how long that focus lasts.

I’ll be bringing some bits and stuff from the left overs to the club meeting, including some books. See you there.
