Agenda:

1.     New Meeting Location

LeRoy Nelson contacted his church and was able to secure reservations for 2012 for our normal second Tuesday of the month meetings.

Details - The church has a new building with a large assembly room that is used for large events and can easily handle our club. LeRoy was able to reserve it for all ten meetings in 2012. Our August meeting is always at Jim’s house, and the December meeting is at Richard’s church in Sunnyvale. A December reservation would be very hard to get.

The church is Bridges Community Church in Los Altos. The address is 625 Magdalena Ave, ½ block off Foothill Blvd with easy access to I-280.

The church would like a donation of $50 for each meeting to cover any added janitorial expense.  They also reserve the right to bump us if needed, and if they do, there are other rooms that we can use. They would not bump us from the site. One of the other rooms is a gym, that is sometimes available on Tuesdays.

The room has lots of chairs and tables available, so it will be easy to set up for our meeting.  They also have a permanently installed video projector and screen, that you can attach your computer. In my letter to the church, I stated that the club would set up the meeting space as we need, and return the room to its previous state when we leave. I also said that we would clean-up any shavings or dust if we generate any during a demonstration.   The time schedule we have the room is 6:00pm to 10:00pm.

Discussion – There was very little discussion and it was decided to accept the this generous offer.

2.     The Competition

Curtis presented the rules, and categories from previous competitions and it was decided to follow them for this year’s competition. Curtis will contact Jim Gott and Bruce Heister to see if they would be willing to be judges. The competition is planned for sometime in October with a critique of the award winning entries at the November general meeting.

3.     Selling Excess Club Equipment

We briefly discussed selling some of the club lathes. The club currently has four or five (maybe more) lathes that are rarely used. One caveat is that if the basic or beginner course is resurrected we may need some of those lathes for classes.

4.     Basic Class

In an email last week George Lutz has offered to take over the basic class. Pat will work with George to get the class rolling for this fall.

5.     Club Elections

Election time is coming and the idea of a nominating committee was discussed. Included in this discussion was further talk on setting up an Executive Committee to help oversee the running of the club. Pat will contact Terry Gannon, Ken Clifford and Laura Uden to work on getting the committee started.

6.     Christmas Meeting and Dinner

Larry Maggi has agreed to put together a sign-up sheet for the potluck portion of the dinner. Karl Hoff will order the turkey and Pat will check to see if a ham is being ordered, if not he will take care of it. At a future sawdust session at Jim’s house Pat and Larry will inventory the supplies for the dinner and arrange to purchase supplies as needed.

Not on the agenda, but worthy of discussion

7.     Club By-Laws

There was a lot of discussion around adopting club by-laws. There was also discussion on whether the club should look at becoming some sort of official entity such as a non-profit or other type of association. It was generally felt that acquiring and maintaining a checking account and the expected influx of money from next year’s AAW symposium would be easier if we had some sort of legal standing.

Cecil and Edgar are going to take a first pass at putting together a set of by-laws for approval by the general membership. In an email after the board meeting David Vannier will help with this effort.

8.     Other Items of interest

Ed Howe brought several bowls he made from the Ash trees harvested recently in Mountain View. Ed also made a collection plate for the church that allowed us access to the trees. Thank you Ed, they looked great!

Cecil discussed a large Redwood tree that will be taken out in San Mateo. The tree is about 85 to 95 feet tall and approximately 4 feet in diameter near the base. It comes down in late October or November.
