August 2nd Juried Club Competition, with Awards and Club Barbeque
Please mark your calendar that the August meeting will be held on Saturday, August 2nd at Jim Laflin’s house.
There will no Tuesday night meeting in August. The Barbeque will be held in conjunction with the Juried Club Competition.
Competition rules, skill levels, turned object categories and entry forms will be available at the July meeting.
This combined event is the first of its kind for our club, so I encourage you to enter into the competition or at
least attend the BBQ and see what your fellow members have entered. You can be a part of the competition by voting
on for the people’s choice award.
Participants in the competition will check in their turnings between 8:30 and 9:30 AM Saturday morning, August 2nd.
From 9:30 till noon, the Judges will evaluate each piece based on skill level the type of turning, form, design and finish.
All members and guests are welcome to the annual August club barbeque which will start at 12 noon. Be sure to bring your own chair to sit on.
Hopefully by early afternoon, we can announce the winners of the competition.
Professional Artist Demo:
The board is working on a professional artist demo, that may be a bit different. Stay turned for details
Free Wood Turning Hands On:
Sorry for the delay in getting the free wood turning hands classes scheduled, but we some of the resources have full calendars.
I hope to announce the data for the free wood turning hands session 3 by the July meeting. Barry Uden will be presenter at Session Three,
which will focus on Bowl turning, sanding, reverse chucking, finishing and more. Whether or not you attended the earlier sessions,
you will gain valuable insight and hone your skills at this class. We have plenty of room to accommodate all members that are
interested in attending these sessions.
Name Badge Raffle Participation:
Don’t forget, if you don’t have a shop made Name Badge you can’t be part of the monthly raffle.
So get busy turning.
Symposiums:
Symposium season is over and as far as I know, Dave Vannier was the only WBW member that attended the AAW
Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 13 to 15. Ask him for the highlights next time you see him at a meeting.
President’s Challenge Participation Points: The current standing in the Presidents Challenge
participation point contest still has 4 members tied for the lead, but there is a number of other folks that
are right on their heals in total points. Participate in the Presidents challenge win a nice prize at the end
of the year. We also award points to the individuals that assist in the setup and tear down for special events
and for Visiting Artist demos.

June Members Meeting Demonstration Recap:
Dave Vannier presented an excellent chalk board discussion on how to approach the layout and cutting of logs,
to produce the most desirable blank. The members in attendance joined in the discussion with many good questions.
In addition to Dave’s excellent talk he also recommended the book, Turning Green Wood by Michael O’Donnell.
A copy of this book is in the club library, which will be making a long awaited appearance next month.
What was most helpful was Dave’s understanding of how to approach different logs to gain maximum grain configuration.
He noted that if you want the best pieces, you may have to sacrifice quantity for quality
