January Meeting Recap:
|
February 2016 meeting - Jim Rogers: Toolmaking for woodturning
|
|
|
Jim is the wood turning instructor for the Mt.
Diablo Unified School District's wood turning program.
He is an advocate of self made tools, which serves well for the school's low budget.
Self made tools offer the advantage of getting what you want at a good price.
He showed us many tools and processes including heat treating for combination of strength and hardness.
He displayed several of the tools made in the school shop.

Saturday February 20 demonstration by Eric Lofstrom
|
|
|
Did you make it to Eric Lofstorm's demo?
If you didn't, you missed a a good time with several projects.
His tool control, particularly the skew, was definitely impressive.
He started showing us "the dance" and compared the body motion to Japanese woodworkers.
Unfortunately for me, it is a very hard motion to duplicate.
The mechanical knee just doesn't work the same.
He then turned a top, using just a skew, but one with his grind.
I am going to have to see if I can grind one to work they way he used it.
He showed us a cheap homemade chatter tool, and some SeaHawk coloring.
I didn't care for the colors, but guess I'll go collect another tool.
Next on tap was a lidded box, with a really nice feel for the lid.
All this in the morning! Two more projects wrapped up the afternoon.

Let Bob Bley know your thoughts about the demos! We will have
Sharon Doughtie in July and Brad Adams in Oct.
They should be good times.
I never know what I will walk away with, but I always learn something and have a good time.
You should have gotten an email asking for your input about hands on with Sharon.
Email Bob if you are interested. He needs to plan.
