February 2018 meeting: Bottom side hollowing by Claude Godcharles
|
|
|
When the top of the vase has an opening too small for hollowing, the turner must then hollow from the bottom of the piece.
The trick is then to plug the bottom hole. That is best done with a piece from the same wood so as to hide the entry hole.
Claude showed us how to do that.
Clever as he is, the piece shown had almost no clue that he had hollowed from the bottom.
Nice going Claude. Now, maybe we can do it, too.

President's Musings - Bud Trapp
|
Claude Godcharles came to the rescue for our February Club program. Dave Vannier had an emergency eye operation which has grounded him and could not present his Basket Illusions talk; we will have to wait for a while for Dave's eyes to heal. Claude showed us an interesting approach to cutting out a base
"V" plug, prior to hollowing the vase from the bottom side.
If you have not already signed up for Rudy Lopez' day long Demo on March 10, contact Bob Bley (rbley90@gmail.com). Prior to attending you should look at Rudy's website (www.rudolphlopez.com). Because Rudy uses Rubber Chucky products in his Demo, the Rubber Chucky company has given WBW two of their products (each sells for $90+) for our raffle at the Demo.
Looking ahead - On March 13, Dennis Lillis will show us how to turn a thin green wood bowl. At the April 10th meeting, Claude will return to demonstrate how to finish the bottom hiding the base opening. For May 8, Tom Kenyon will show us how to prepare the segmented board for a segmented bowl from a board. Tom Gaston will discuss first aid for woodworkers on June 12. On July 10, Jim Rodgers will present a program on shapes and form. Our traditional Club Picnic is in August.
The GOAL of the President's Challenge is to challenge each of us to try something new and different, so what you bring to the Challenge should be something you have done in the last 12 months!
As previously announced the Challenge for March will be embellishments. For April, the Challenge will be a thin green wood bowl and in May it will be hidden back side hollowing.
All members are welcome to attend the next WBW Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, March 20, 7:00 p.m., at 501 Portola Road, Portola Valley, CA. We will be meeting in Parlor 1. Because of the construction at this address, maps will be available at the March Club meeting.
