Ornamental turning

Bob showed us the procedure for turning the spherical with bark.
He mounted a piece with bark facing the headstock,
turned the bottom with a tenon,
reversed mounted the piece with bark facing the tailstock,
then proceeded to round the top, including bark.
It was then ready for hollowing.
Turning the foot smaller than the chuck had to do with the means of reversing (tenon toward tailstock), holding and turning.

The President's Message from Tom Gaston

We had our first board meeting of the year.
A few highlights from the meeting are:
1. Looking for a new photographer to take pictures of show and tells, president's challenges, and demonstrations.
2. Member-at-large position will be Claude Godcharles.
3. Summer picnic with Silicon Valley Woodturners. Committee headed by Laura Uden and Curtis Vose.
Please volunteer to help.
4. Working on growing membership and outreach.
If you have any friends, family, etc. that might be interested in woodturning, please invite them to a meeting.
We would especially like to encourage students, new wood turners, and women wood turners to come to the meetings and demonstrations.
5. We are exploring the idea of a woodturning show where members can display our pieces to the public.
6. We will formalize the saw dust sessions and mentoring process to make it a club sanctioned activity with insurance coverage (more to follow).

Let me say cleaning the shop has more upsides than down.
Last year I made a total of 21 pieces that were finished.
Since I cleaned up, I’ve completed 10, and have mad real progress on 4 with 2 pieces exploring some different directions.
Brings a smile to the face. Not having to move stuff to work on something,
to move stuff to do the next step is really more satisfying as well as efficient.
The down side is a) I’m going to have to sell more this year and b) now that I can go all the way around my table saw,
I find myself debating about which way to go. Real buzz kill! Seriously, cleaning up was both over due, and really paying off.
I hope all the wood I let go is going to good use.
I’m in an embellishment phase. How long, or what will stick is yet to be determined.
But I’m having fun exploring different techniques. I finished another painting piece.
This one was much harder for me because I actually had to stay within the lines!
But it gave me a chance to try some of the additional 14 colors that I bought.
Next up, Dixie Biggs. If you have any interest or even just curious you don’t want to miss the demo in March.
Make sure you sign up with Bob Bley to insure we have an accurate count for lunch. You can guess that carving is in my future!
As a final note, what would you like to see as a program for a club meeting?
Or how about a professional demonstrator or even just a direction for a demonstrator to show?
Leave it to me to make suggestions, and you will get bored with embellishment programs!
Which wouldn’t be bad for me, but is probably not for everyone.
I’m looking forward to seeing Jon’s program this month.
His is one of the worlds best, if not the best ornamental turners in the world.
