President's Turning Thoughts:

Tom K bowl

Next Meeting: In previous month’s show and tell presentations, Tom Kenyon displayed striking wood turned bowls, using a technique that can best be described as Mulit-Layered Lamination. The result looks like a segmented bowl in the pattern of a vortex. Tom is putting together a power point presentation and examples that will describe the process used to create one of these pieces.

David Ellsworth

David Ellsworth: The David Ellsworth demonstration proved to be a great success, with almost 50 wood turners attending the event. David was kind enough to turn three demo pieces that were raffled off at the end of the event. His technique of turning bowls and hollow forms, using a few tools that he designed, is simple and direct. His mastery over this medium is complete and demonstrates what can be accomplished with the careful application of common sense techniques and a few good tools.

Free Wood Turning Hands On Sessions Recap: On Saturday, March 15th we held session two of the free wood turning hands classes at Jim Laflin’s shop. Thanks to the efforts of Jim, Karl Hoff, Larry Maggi, Laura Uden and our demonstrator, Barry Uden we were prepared to host a larger number of attendees, but alas only Mario Tarabini and Neil Maggi showed up for the free instruction.

Barry Uden will be presenting Session Three – Bowl turning, sanding, reverse chucking, finishing and more, at a date to be determined in June or July. Whether or not you attended the earlier sessions, you will gain valuable insight and hone your skills at this class. We have plenty of room to accommodate all members that are interested in attending these sessions. Please be on the look out for the upcoming announced date of Session Three.

The March meeting initiated the free raffle for members who wear a shop made name badge. The April meeting saw an even larger number of individuals participating in this get to know your fellow wood turner. So if you have at name badge, wear it proudly. If you don’t, make one or you will remain anonymous.

It must be Symposium season:For those of you that have not been keeping track of the calendar, the Utah Wood Turning Symposium will be taking place on May 15th to 17th. For details perform a web search of the above title. Significant this year will be a tribute of the recently past founding member of this event, Dale Nish. If you are interested in flying, driving, surfing, etc. to Utah and looking for someone to share traveling expenses drop me an email at cvbayside@aol.com and we will see if you can be hooked up with a fellow traveler.

Also AAW is holding their yearly Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona, June 13 to 15. This is relative close to us, so some of you may feel like taking a trip to the South West. For details of the demonstrating artists please see the latest edition of American Woodturner or logon to the American Association of Woooturners web site.

The current standing in the Presidents Challenge participation point contest has: Larry Dubia, Tom Haines, George Lutz, Harvey Klein and Tom Gaston all tied with 6 points each. It is still early in the year so start submitting your version of the president’s challenge and earn points to the end of the year prize. Why don’t you try browsing the Web Site: http://www.westbaywoodturners.com/ ? There is a small storehouse of knowledge contained at this site. As a member, it is yours free to use, so use it.
