Wednesday October 20 2021
Post Covid Show & Tell and President's Challenge
|
|
It was time to show woodturnings created during the Covid lockdown.
And what a show it was.
There was no program in October.
Showing our year-long accomplishments was entertaining enough.

President's Letter - Tom Gaston

Greetings woodturners.
We had a successful Show and Tell meeting last month with many beautiful items displayed. It was great to be able to see turnings up close and appreciate the color, touch, depth and overall feel of the pieces in person. You can see some of the pictures in the rest of this newsletter.
Bob Bley also received an award from West Bay Woodturners for outstanding leadership and service to the club. He has served the club in many ways including member at large, vice president, program director, and held the club together during the last 2 years by organizing and being the Zoom master/host. Thank you Bob!
We now have a West Bay Woodturners group chat on the Slack platform. Tina Chou has set this up and has now extended this to any who are interested. It is a great way to see progress on current turnings, finished pieces, shop setup, wood sources, and a way to have discussions on a variety of topics. Give it a try.
The November meeting will include the election for the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. It is not too late for any additional nominations. After the election and business meeting, we will have the President's challenge and Show and Tell. The President's challenge will be a holiday ornament. Claude Godcharles will be demonstrating the turning of a hinged box.
We hope to see you at the next meeting. Reminder, we still ask to to wear a mask while inside.

"As the Wood Turns"
The Lockup Eases - by Dave Vannier
|
If you made the meeting last month, you had the opportunity to see some interesting work.
Some really nice pieces were made during the pandemic.
I’m sure we didn’t see half of the work, so be sure to bring in some of it for show and tell this next month.
I’ve spent a lot of time exploring embellishments, ranging from textures to carving and painting.
The lock up left me feeling like I had the time to invest in exploring them.
I showed a number of these pieces. But as the lockup eases, and green wood became available, I’ve been doing some roughing again.
In the process, I succeeded in breaking a oneway bowl cutter.
The screw that holds the cutter in the knife broke off, leaving part of it in the knife.
I’d never seen this before, or heard about it.
My call to oneway showed that this can happen, usually because the screw is loose.
So, check before you use the coring system.

"Using Non-Wood Materials" from the AAW
|
|
In case you have not seen it, check out the latest bi-monthly newsletter from the AAW.
It is amazing what one can turn from materials other than wood.
Consider cardboard/plaster, polymer clay, newsprint and coffee beans.
