Priddle 2

September 2019 - Small work by Harvey Klein

Harvey

Harvey Klein, master of miniatures.
Harvey displayed a large number of small pieces which he created. He talked about and radiated the fun and satisfaction of doing small work. He showed tools he had made suitable for small turning. It seemed that repurposed Allen wrenches were his favorite.
He turned a small vase, hollowed and finished in short order. A small project, finished quickly and well done.

Demonstration Sunday September 8 2019
Graeme Priddle and Melissa Engler

Graeme-Mellisa

Graeme Priddle has over 20 years experience in the woodworking field, best known for his sculptural turnings/carvings reflecting his life and environments in Northland, New Zealand.
Melissa Engler is a woodworker/sculptor based in Asheville, NC. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Graeme and Melissa provided a spirited and entertaining demonstration. They showed us woodturning, power carving, burning and coloring techniques. Their skills showed as they worked through the steps of producing special wood art. Embellishment was on display in a very professional way.

"As the Wood Turns" by Dave Vannier

I've volunteered to write a short article for the newsletter each month. Tom felt I needed a tagline, so here is your first edition of "As The Wood Turns ".

If you missed our last demonstrator, sorry. We had a good time, and I learned a bunch of new techniques. Someone asked Tom Haines in the last meeting if he ever made practice pieces, and he said yes this was one. Well, I have a practice piece. I would give myself a B. I really like the texturing and will do it again. But, the carving needs work, and ISAMP! (I Suck At Milk Paint). I gave up and just painted with acrylic paint. Looks ok, but a lot more work.

Next on tap is David Ellsworth. He is one of the founders of AAW, an outstanding turner, and an excellent teacher. Don't miss his all day demo. I have taken a 3 day hands on class with him, and highly recommend him. Don't miss this opportunity to take a one day class! The price is a great deal, especially when you realize you don’t have to add in travel and lodging expenses.

One more important topic. It is that time of year, where each of us needs to answer JFK's question "ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club!", or something like that... Yes, elections are coming up. Each of us can take a role in keeping the club vibrant and improving. So, think about what role you are willing to take on and learn more by talking with the current officers. Don't forget to thank our officers for their time and effort.

Keep learning and turning, see you soon.
