Wednesday August 5 Art Liestman Demo on Therming
|
Art Liestman, woodturner, master of 'therming'.
After being used to all woodturnings being round,
Art's demo was a refreshing awakening to the idea that other shapes may be created.
All have arcs of an incomplete circle which make them particularly interesting and attractive.
Art showed us how to do it.
All of this from his shop in in Coquitlam, British Columbia, via Zoom. His

The President's Message from Tom Gaston
|
Greetings.
I hope all are well and are able to get into the shop to do some turning. I have been getting into the shop and building some furniture and have incorporated wood turning into the projects. I used a lamp auger to hollow table legs to accept 20 inch
x 3/8 inch diameter all thread. It was surprisingly easy and took about 5 minutes per leg. Now the harder part
is to turn the outside shapes. I also used the lathe to make some plugs for a veneer top and then used a Graeme Priddle technique of embellishing.
I also would like to encourage you to take part in one or more zoom meetings that are listed in the news letter.
We anticipate that in person meetings may not occur this year, so this format is what we will have to use for the foreseeable future.
Many of you have "attended" these meetings, but still seem to be missing some members.
For those that have joined these meetings, you know that we have had some excellent presentations.
For those who haven't, give it a try. If you need help, contact one of us for assistance.
We will hold an executive board meeting September 21 at 7PM via zoom.
Please let me know of any suggestions for topics to be discussed.
Proposed agenda so far:
1. 2020 budget revision.
2. Search for program director. Bob Hedges has resigned and so far Bob Bley has filled in.
3. WBW and SVW alliance.
4. Nomination and election of officers for 2021.
5. Membership and recruitment.
Happy turning!
Tom

"As the Wood Turns" Yarn Bowls - by Dave Vannier
|
I tried my hand at making a few yarn bowls for my wife.
The nice part is they need to be heavy, so they don’t move around when she is pulling on the yarn.
The time spent was on carving the curve out.
With the first one, I experienced the rule I frequently forget: Design around the tools that you have.
I made the curve too small to get the Dremel sander into the curve.
I never hand sand unless I have no choice, something about my lazy personality.
The second and the 3rd were a little bigger, and I bought a smaller drum for the Dremel.
Ended up using the micro motor to sand the last one. Much easier on the hand and to adjust the speed.
Still working on the finish, so she hasn’t gotten them to use yet.
Did you attend the Art Liestman demo? If yes, did you try therming? I have some ideas I’d like to try, but the heat and smoke are really limiting my studio time. Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. If you know someone in the path of these fires, please reach out and make sure they are ok.

AAW - What's going on with them?
|
There are some very good remote demonstrations available through AAW. They are inexpensive sessions with professional turners.
The AAW website has a page called
AAW Exchange.
Click it and take a look.
We are all familiar with the 'American Woodturner' magazine (those of us who are AAW members).
Did you know there is secondary magazine, availble on-line four times a year, offering foundational woodturning advice?
'Woodturning Fundamentals' is just a click away.
